Burton, Frederic William

Frederic William Burton

This exhibition (25.10.2017 - 14.01.2018) presents an opportunity to look afresh at the work of

Irish born Burton settled in London where he encountered the Pre-Raphaelite circle that influenced his taste and his art, as echoed in his highly finished watercolour, ‘Hellelil and Hildebrand, the Meeting on the Turret Stairs’ (1864). The exhibition will explore all aspects of his career as an artist, including his early portrait miniatures and subjects inspired by the West of Ireland. It will also look at his period in Germany and his tenure as director of the National Gallery, London. Curated by Dr Marie Bourke, art historian and former Head of Education at the National Gallery of Ireland, the exhibition will include Burton’s iconic works drawn from the National Gallery and other public collections.
